PRINCIPAL CIVIL ENGINEER

Overview

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited University.

Registration: Professional Engineering registration is a must.

Experience: 15 plus years of experience preferred.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Principal Civil Engineer, the candidate shall be able to lead, develop, and grow a civil engineering team to execute projects in alignment with the business goals set forth by the Alliance Engineering Executive Team. This candidate will be responsible for establishing goals and key performance indicators for the team, as well as tracking and forecasting the performance of the team to allow the team to adapt and grow to meeting the established goals. The Principal Civil Engineer will be directly engaged with all essential business functions for the successful execution of projects and he growth of the team. This shall include project engineering, team management, forecasting, department business plan development, business development, and proposal development. As a Principal Engineer, the candidate will work with the Chief Engineers for all disciplines to ensure procedures and processes are developed and refined to maximize the efficiency of the team and to maintain a high level of quality. The candidate must exhibit a complete understanding of engineering principles, theories, typical applications, codes, standards, published recommendations, and concepts associated with the civil engineering as required to complete project or system designs. The Principal Civil Engineer will operate as Civil Engineer of Record for the assigned project(s) or will be responsible for assigning a Civil Engineer from the department's civil engineering team. This candidate must have the ability to schedule and forecast the department's civil engineering and design team and manage the team within the schedule and budget constraints. This candidate shall be responsible for ensuring all civil project deliverables and associated engineering analysis and calculations are done to provide a high-quality product.

Experience

The following training and/or experience is typical for this position.

  • Experience working for consulting engineering firm or as a consulting engineer

  • Experience managing projects and project teams

  • Experience developing reports and studies

  • Experience developing proposals

  • Experience participating in business development and marketing functions

  • Experience engineering and managing projects in the municipal, transportation, industrial, and/or energy sectors

  • Experience with the Autodesk Suite of CAD software packages such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, AutoCAD, Revit, etc. such that there is a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals required to effectively use these packages to develop project deliverables

  • Finite Element Analysis

  • Familiarity with the API, NFPA, ANSI, and other industry standards

Requirements

  • Ability to work well in a team environment to complete tasks associated with a common goal or project. 

  • Ability to communicate to colleagues and project team members to ensure successful execution and completion of tasks.

  • Ability to develop plans and maintain a schedule related to multiple concurrent projects and proposals.

  • Ability to travel to project sites to collect field data to perform field inspections, which may involve being out of town for multiple days at a time.

  • Ability to organize and schedule teams for executing site visits to acquire and document field data, and to verify the data collected is the correct information needed for the application.

  • Must have the desire to develop professionally and the ability to set goals with align with business objectives.

  • Must have the desire and ability to professionally develop the engineering team which aligns with the business objectives and goals.
